In 1996 the BGES, under contract to the old Association for Preservation of Civil War Sites and using American Battlefield Protection Program grant money, planned and executed a multidisciplinary conference that was hosted by Professor Herman Hattaway at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
The event produced a different look at the challenges presented by a statewide and rather sparsely populated rural area where military actions were little and far between. The program did produce consensus with the largest achievements involving recommendations at the Mine Creek Battlefield, where a fine interpretative center and park has been constructed and is well managed. The states of Missouri and Kansas are finding ways to cooperate in this preservation effort.
